Is it easy to get around in Prague?

by Cynthia

I am trying to plan a trip w/myself and my 18 yr old daughter. We are spending 6 days in Paris and three in Prague (if we decide on Prague). Just wondering about local transportation and getting around. Will it be safe for myself and my daughter?

Getting Around Prague
by: Martina

Hi Cynthia,

Thanks for your question. It's a simple one actually.

Prague is very easy to get around in. It has one of the best public transportation systems in Europe and offers a metro (subway), trams (street cars) and buses.

Aside from our transport, Prague is ideal for walking from place to place. Many visitors will go a whole day without using transport at all.

Regardless, the Prague metro system is certainly smaller than other large cities like Paris which makes it very accessible and easier to get acquainted with quickly.

It's also easy to buy and use tickets. You can get them at most places where newspapers are sold or at any metro station. Then, all you have to do is get the ticket stamped in one of the little yellow machines before going down to the metro platform or once you enter the tram or bus. That's it! (On occasion ticket controllers might ask to see your ticket.)

The only cautionary advice we might give would be to watch for pickpockets. But, this is a common theme when traveling in Prague or in any of Europe's large cities and awareness has risen in recent years so it's becoming less of a problem.

All the best,

Martina
